The ICSI procedure, step by step

1. Stimulation and monitoring, exactly as in an IVF cycle.
2. Egg collection under sedation; on the same day the sperm sample is prepared (or sperm is retrieved surgically where needed).
3. Injection. The embryologist identifies the mature eggs and, under a microscope, injects a single sperm into each one with a very fine glass needle.
4. Fertilisation check. The next day, the eggs are checked for signs of normal fertilisation.
5. Embryo culture. Embryos are cultured for 3–5 days and graded (see how embryo grading works), then transferred or frozen as in IVF.

How ICSI differs from IVF

In conventional IVF, many sperm are placed near each egg. In ICSI, an embryologist injects a single sperm. Egg collection and embryo transfer steps remain part of the wider IVF pathway.
