Male fertility

Poor sperm motility

Motility describes how well sperm swim. Even with a reasonable count, poor movement can reduce the chance of sperm reaching the egg.

Poor sperm motility (asthenozoospermia) is common in male-factor evaluations. Results should be read with count and morphology; one abnormal test is not the whole story.

Treatment conversations

Depending on severity and the female partner’s findings, options may include lifestyle changes, IUI in selected mild cases, or IVF with ICSI. See male fertility care, low sperm count, IUI, and ICSI.
