Fertility treatment is easier to face when you know its shape. Here is what happens, in order, and roughly how long each part takes.
First consultation
You meet your specialist, who reviews your history and any previous reports. You will have time to describe what you have already tried and to ask what you want to ask.
Investigations
Blood tests, an ultrasound scan, and a semen analysis where relevant. These are chosen for your situation, not ordered as a fixed panel.
Your plan, explained
You come back to discuss what the results show and what they mean. Options are set out with their realistic prospects, what each involves, and what each costs.
Treatment
If you go ahead, the treatment cycle begins — medicines, monitoring scans, and the procedures your plan calls for, with the team available throughout.
The laboratory
Where IVF or ICSI is involved, our embryologists fertilise, culture and monitor the embryos, and your doctor passes on their updates.
Result and next steps
A pregnancy test roughly two weeks after transfer. Whatever the outcome, you get a review — what happened, what it tells us, and what the options are now.
How long does it all take?
People are often surprised that the investigation stage is the quick part. Most testing fits within a single menstrual cycle, because several tests have to be done on particular days of that cycle.

These are typical ranges, not promises. Cycles are sometimes postponed, and sometimes a frozen transfer in a later month is the better clinical decision.
The two-week wait
Almost everyone finds the interval between transfer and the pregnancy test the hardest part. It is worth knowing in advance that this is normal, that there is nothing you can do during it that will change the outcome, and that ordinary activity, work and gentle exercise are fine unless you have been told otherwise.
Early home pregnancy tests are a common source of distress — they can be misleading in both directions after fertility treatment. We will tell you when to test and arrange the blood test that gives a reliable answer.
If a cycle does not work
Not every cycle succeeds, and that is not a sign that nothing will. A cycle that did not result in a pregnancy still produces information: how the ovaries responded, how many eggs were collected, how they fertilised, how the embryos developed. That information often changes the next plan.
You will be offered a review appointment to go through exactly this. Some people go straight on to a frozen embryo transfer; some change protocol; some pause. There is no obligation to decide quickly.

Fertility treatment asks a lot of people — injections, appointments, waiting, and telling or not telling family. The medical side is only part of what you are managing.
Ask us. If something is frightening you, or a medicine is causing side effects, or you simply want a decision explained again, that is a reasonable thing to raise, and it is better raised than carried.
