Male fertility test

Semen analysis test in Kompally

A semen analysis is the basic test of male fertility. At our Kompally centre the sample is collected at the centre, examined in our lab, and the report is explained to you on the same visit.

Getting a semen analysis test at our Kompally centre

When a couple is trying to conceive, both partners are usually assessed together. For the male partner, the first step is a semen analysis test, sometimes called a sperm analysis test or sperm count test. It looks at how much semen there is, how many sperm are present, how well they move and how they are shaped. At Sree Nandaka IVF Centre in Kompally, the test is done in our own lab: you give the sample at the centre, we analyse it, show you your own sample under the microscope, and explain the report to you on the same visit.

Please note. The semen sample is collected only at the centre. Home sample collection is not offered.

Who may be advised a semen analysis

A semen analysis is part of the routine fertility assessment for a couple. Your doctor may suggest it when:

  • you have been trying to conceive for some time without a pregnancy, and both partners are being assessed;
  • treatment such as IUI, IVF or ICSI is being planned, because the result helps decide which option fits;
  • an earlier report from another lab needs to be repeated or checked;
  • there is a history that can affect sperm production, such as a past testicular problem, surgery or a long illness.

Your doctor will advise whether and when the test is needed in your case. A semen analysis is usually done early, because the male partner’s result can change the plan for both of you.

Before your visit

  • Contact the centre first. Call or WhatsApp +91 76720 01080, or use Book a Consultation, so the team can tell you when to come and how to prepare.
  • Abstinence. The centre will tell you how many days of abstinence (no ejaculation) are advised before the test. The number of days is recorded on your report, because it can affect the result.
  • Recent illness and medicines. Tell the team about any fever or significant illness in the last few months and about any medicines you take, as these can affect sperm for a time.
  • Earlier reports. Bring any previous semen analysis or fertility reports, for both partners if available.

How the semen analysis test is done, step by step

  1. Labelled container. At the centre you are given a labelled semen container.
  2. Collection at the centre. You collect the sample at the centre. Samples are not accepted from home.
  3. Liquefaction. The sample is kept in a warmer at 37°C for about 15–20 minutes. Fresh semen is thick and becomes liquid during this time, which is needed before it can be examined.
  4. Analysis. The sample is then checked by eye (macroscopic examination) and under the microscope (microscopic examination).
  5. Seeing your sample. You are called into the lab, shown your own sample under the microscope, and what you are seeing is explained.
  6. Counselling and report. The whole process usually takes about 30–40 minutes. After counselling, your report is given to you on the same visit.

What the lab checks in your sample

Macroscopic examination (by eye)

  • Volume: how much semen is in the sample.
  • Colour and appearance.
  • Viscosity: how thick the sample is after it has liquefied.
  • Agglutination: whether sperm are sticking together in clumps.
  • Abstinence days: recorded on the report.

Microscopic examination

  • Sperm count: how many sperm are present.
  • Motility: how the sperm move, reported as progressive, non-progressive, active and sluggish.
  • Morphology: the percentage of normally shaped sperm, with defects of the head, neck, midpiece and tail noted.
  • Overall impression: a summary of the findings, which is discussed with you.

Seeing your own sample in the lab

A semen report can be hard to picture from numbers alone. At our centre you are called into the lab and shown your own sample under the microscope. Seeing the sperm moving, and how count, movement and shape are judged, can make the report easier to understand and the next steps easier to discuss. You are welcome to ask questions while you are there.

Your report and counselling on the same visit

You do not need to come back another day to collect the report. After the analysis, the findings are explained to you in counselling and the written report is given on the same visit. If your partner is having her own tests, the results of both partners are read together when the treatment plan is discussed.

How to read your semen analysis report

Labs compare results with reference values published by the World Health Organization (WHO). A result below a reference value does not by itself mean a man cannot father a child, and a result within the reference range does not guarantee a pregnancy. For the WHO 2021 values and a line-by-line explanation of each part of the report, read our guide semen analysis normal range: how to read your report.

After the test: possible next steps

What happens next depends on the findings, your partner’s tests and your history. Your doctor may suggest:

  • a repeat semen analysis after some weeks, because results can vary from one sample to the next;
  • further male fertility tests where indicated, described on our male fertility page;
  • general lifestyle advice;
  • a discussion of treatment options, such as IUI or ICSI. Our guide comparing IUI, IVF and ICSI explains who each usually suits.

Frequently asked questions

Can I collect the semen sample at home?

No. At Sree Nandaka IVF Centre the semen sample is collected only at the centre. Home sample collection is not offered. You are given a labelled container at the centre, and the sample is analysed in our lab.

How long does a semen analysis test take?

After collection the sample is kept at 37°C for about 15–20 minutes so that it can liquefy, and then it is analysed. The whole process usually takes about 30–40 minutes. After counselling, the report is given to you on the same visit.

How many days of abstinence are needed before a sperm analysis test?

The centre will tell you how many days of abstinence (no ejaculation) are advised before your test. Please follow those instructions, because a very short or very long gap can affect the result. The number of abstinence days is recorded on your report.

How do I read my semen analysis report?

Your report is explained to you during counselling on the same visit. For a line-by-line explanation of volume, count, motility and morphology and the WHO reference values, read our guide semen analysis normal range: how to read your report.

What is the sperm analysis test price?

Fees are not listed on this page. Please call or WhatsApp the centre on +91 76720 01080 to ask about the current fee before your visit.

Does one abnormal result mean male infertility?

Not necessarily. Semen results can vary from one sample to the next, and illness or fever in recent months can affect them. Your doctor may suggest a repeat test and will read the result together with your history and your partner’s tests.

Is a semen analysis test painful?

No. There are no needles and no procedure. The sample is produced by the man himself (by masturbation) into the labelled container at the centre.
