Blocked fallopian tubes and fertility

When tubes are blocked or damaged, egg and sperm may not meet. IVF was developed partly for this reason — fertilisation can occur in the laboratory instead.

Blocked fallopian tubes may follow infection, endometriosis, prior surgery or other causes. Diagnosis often involves HSG or laparoscopy. One open tube sometimes still allows natural conception or IUI; bilateral blockage usually points toward IVF.

Treatment direction

Surgery to repair tubes is considered only in selected cases. Many couples proceed to IVF in Kompally, which bypasses the tubes. Also see female infertility, evaluation, and IVF & ICSI.
